I have not written an argument essay in a long time, but I found that the concept became easy to grasp again. Before even writing the essay I found it challenging to choose a topic to analyze and discuss. First off, deciding whether or not to support the idea of the equality in achieving the American Dream was a tough choice that depended on all that we had read. After so many readings, I felt that I had to take time to look back at each one and what they discussed and how it could relate to the American Dream. After looking over all of the readings, I found that writing about adolescents’ challenges in achieving the American Dream would be best for me. While writing the essay, it was simple to find support for my claim in “Cultures of Cruelty” as well as “Saplings in the Storm.” As my essay went on, I felt more and more comfortable supporting my claim and countering other arguments. However, one tough decision was deciding which particular counterargument would work well in my essay and picking only one to discuss.
